After their 1-2 at Bath nine days ago, we have been able to split SPOT LITE and RIO SANTOS up this afternoon as the two three-year olds go in opposite directions when they hit the M4 and both have solid chances in competitive races.
RIO SANTOS – 3:00 Chepstow ATR
It has been a solid and consistent season when Rio has had his favoured fast ground over sprint distances and he has achieved three solid placed efforts, two of those coming behind Spot Lite at Bath. Although he takes on older horses this afternoon, he is back down to 0-55 level and we have booked useful 7lb claimer Theodore Ladd, so he will only be carrying 8 stone on his back. With the addition of cheekpieces off such a light weight, hopefully today is the day he can find his way into first spot in the winner’s enclosure.
SPOT LITE – 6:10 Windsor ATR
Like his fellow relatives Mattamia and Gladiatix, who we trained to multiple sprint successes at three, it has taken a while for the penny to drop with Spot Lite but he has finally found his form with three wins in his last four starts. The only blip came when he was third at Nottingham but he did not appear to like being crowded and did not manage to get into space in time. He is up another 4lb from his recent Bath success but remains in Class 6 company which is certainly a bonus. However, he only denied Cent Flying by a nose when landing his maiden victory seven weeks ago, but due to his subsequent success, that rival is now 10lb better off so he may have the upper edge. However, we feel Spot Lite has improved since then and we don’t know when or where his progress will level out so it will be intriguing to see how that original Bath form works out this evening.
